We created the Wings game and its accompanying publication to engage young people in easy-to-understand conversations about topics such as populism, active citizenship, and advocacy. The game is available online and can be played on a computer, taking approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. It is recommended for ages 14 and up. The story unfolds in the form of an interactive comic, enriched with short mini-games.
In the story, players follow Maori, a character from the planet Tusor, as he becomes deeply outraged when a destructive mine is built where his favorite park once stood. As a young person, he sees his future as hopeless, so he forms a team to fight for an equal and sustainable society. Through his determination, Maori achieves successes, but will he be clever enough to negotiate a good deal with the decision-makers at such a young age? Players will walk in his shoes, following the journey from recognizing injustice to taking action.
A downloadable background material introduces the populism research that the game is based on, and the developed lesson plans offer ideas on how the game can be used in a classroom setting. These lesson plans are recommended for educators and youth professionals who, after playing the game, want to discuss topics such as populist political systems, advocacy, fake news and propaganda media, movement building, and environmental awareness with young people aged 14-20. The publication may also be helpful for those who played the game individually but are curious about the research and social issues behind it.
