“In this methodological handbook, we attempt to explore how we can create a trustful, democratic, and inspiring creative space that motivates students to engage in independent learning, research, and critical thinking, and where discovery, experimentation, and creation take place in a safe environment and within the framework of community activities.”
Teachers working with today’s young people, the Gen Z and Alpha generations, face the daily challenge that traditional classroom methods and frontal teaching are no longer effective enough to foster the comprehensive development of students’ competencies. Beyond teaching the curriculum, we want to teach them to learn independently and collaboratively, to handle uncertainty well, and to constantly renew themselves when necessary. However, there is a lack of time and developed methodology for this. Who could serve as a better example in this regard than artists, whose work is based on continuous search, observation, creation, and renewal? The projects presented in the Demo Lab showcase potential methods for solving a community-wide problem by collaborating between artists and educators, where both children and adults can come together in search of solutions.
We witness how pedagogical practice and the learning process, based in part on Freinet’s thoughts, open up previously untapped possibilities in areas like communication, community building, group learning, problem-solving, and collective creation. Each project is imbued with genuine enthusiasm and the participants’ attentiveness and willingness to work together for a common goal, which inspires readers to initiate their own creative communities.
This publication is warmly recommended for any professional or artist working with children who would like to participate in such a process and learn from past successful examples and experiences. Each project is unique—just as the participants’ interests, problems, and resources vary—so there is sure to be one that provides a good model for collaborative work with your own group. Or simply, let us marvel at the wonders of creativity and be amazed by the ideas, drive, and strength of today’s youth.
